MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. In the same period of 2025, the figure was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth in several governorates. This rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to national electricity output during the first eight months of the year. August alone saw production of 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant increase in total electricity output, with a rise of 204.8% from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a growth rate of 44.1%, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% increase. Electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.5%. Dhofar also recorded growth, with electricity output rising 4.6% from January to August. The figures demonstrated expansion across most regions included in the national data.
Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity production. Musandam’s output remained steady at 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional data revealed notable disparities in electricity growth across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary, covering electricity generation through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity output increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity generation grew by 4.6% up to August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This figure includes regional purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company as well as the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the increase with a net rise of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah saw a 44.2% rise, while Al Wusta and Dhofar experienced gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output increased by roughly 1,592.1 GWh compared to last year.
Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4%. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah faced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net output was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from 2025. The data at the governorate level generally followed the pattern observed in total electricity generation. The national net output remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water output declines across Oman in 2026
Oman’s water production decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, reaching 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, production was approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% drop, with output falling to about 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decline, with water production totaling about 149.90 million cubic metres, down from approximately 155.19 million cubic metres last year.
Dhofar was the main region to buck the national trend, producing about 52.68 million cubic metres through August, which is a 3.4% increase from around 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest utility data thus reveal differing national trends for electricity and water in the initial eight months of 2026, with electricity output rising at both total and net levels, while overall water production remains below the figures of the same period in 2025.
